There may be many reasons
First and foremost is temporary change.In this case your site will not appear in search results for 3-4 days and then it will occupy its old place as usual.This is due to some internal Google ranking mechanism and is pretty normal.
If it is not appearing in search results then the reason may be any of following
Link to illegal torrent sites or illegal download sites.
Site primarily for search engines , not for users
Using tricks intended to improve search engine rankings
Participation in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or PageRank
Using hidden text or hidden links.
loading pages with irrelevant keywords also known as keyword spamming.
someone has copied your site.
Linking to a banned web site
Using Copied Material i.e. Content not original
Using excessive advertising
Problem with Robot.txt
Site should have high availability.If googlebot cant find your site ,it will drop it from index for short time.
